What acceleration does a rocket need to reach a speed of 230 m/s at a height of 1.5 km?

As with most kinematic problems, figuring out which equation to use is most of the challenge. The rest is just plugging in the numbers and calculating the answer. In this situation, the question gives us values for final velocity, initial velocity (assumed to be 0), and distance. The best equation for this is:

v^2 = v^2 - 2ad

Now, we just plug in values and calculate.

(230 m/s)^2 = (0)^2 - 2(a)(1500 m)
a = 17.63 m/s^2

Note, that this acceleration is the net acceleration...meaning the actual acceleration above and beyond the acceleration needed to overcome the downward acceleration from gravity.
